The focus has shifted to T20 cricket as the T20 World Cup 2024 is just 6 months away. The upcoming tournament will start on June 4, with USA and West Indies jointly hosting it. Every team will now be playing more T20Is, and the Indian management is also looking to build up a new team that will feature in the coming ICC event in 2024.

As a result, they have selected new faces in the ongoing five-match series against Australia. On the other hand, it will also be a new team for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa. Some media reports confirmed that the BCCI wants Rohit Sharma to lead the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2024, but he is not part of the South Africa T20Is.

The Indian board has made some big decisions, and one notable one that might be axed is Virat Kohli. The former Indian captain, who was the highest-run scorer in the T20 World Cup 2022, is unlikely to be part of the upcoming tournament. With not much time left in the coming tournament, the selection committee is planning to make a young team.

A prominent reporter from Jagran News shared an exclusive report on Twitter (now X), claiming that Virat Kohli will not be part of the team while Rohit is likely to lead the side in T20 World Cup 2024. He tweeted, ‘Rohit will be the captain of the Indian team, but there is no place for Virat Kohli. This decision was made in the meeting held in Delhi, where Indian head coach Rahul Dravid and all members of the selection committee were present.”

The journalist further added that Rohit will open with Gill or Jaiswal, while Ishan Kishan will bat at No. 3. Hence, it indicates the end of the road for Virat in a shorter format. He is the leading run-scorer in T20I cricket and also has the most runs in T20 World Cup history. Virat has scored 4008 runs in 107 T20I innings at an average and strike rate of 52.74 and 137.97. He has also made one hundred and 37 half-centuries.
