IPL 2023: The former cricketer-turned-broadcaster Ian Smith wants New Zealand’s plans for the 2017 ODI World Cup in India to include seasoned top-order batsman Martin Guptill. Because of Ross Taylor’s retirement in 2022 and Kane Williamson‘s injury in the IPL in 2023. New Zealand’s batting has been noticeably deficient in experience. Smith, therefore, wants Guptill to have more chances to secure his berth in the major tournament.

Interestingly, the 36-year-old was not included in the New Zealand ODI team that traveled to India earlier this year. According to head coach Gary Stead, they are considering their options beyond Guptill. This explains why Finn Allen has been given numerous opportunities at the top of the order. Smith has urged the selectors to think differently, but the youngster has yet to demonstrate his abilities.

“I get where they’re (selectors) going with Finn Allen, but you’ve got to score runs. I’m sorry, he (Allen) just has to show some form for me. I still go back to Martin Guptill. Is his time over? Is he done? Should he just be put out to pasture? I do not know. I probably would have thought yes before Kane Williamson became unavailable. With all that experience and all that knowledge, I might have said yes to Martin Guptill. I’m having second thoughts now because Finn Allen ain’t doing it for me.”

Smith was quoted as saying by SEN Radio

Notably, Devon Conway is the only cricketer in New Zealand’s top order who has played a significant amount of cricket in India. And has the necessary expertise in dealing with pressure conditions. Smith said Conway has too much on his plate. Since he can’t simultaneously play the roles of an attacking batter and an anchor.

New Zealand’s Batting Lineup

“If you look at a player like Conway who’s tearing it up too in the IPL — you are asking him to see off a new ball but belt it to the fence simultaneously. There is risk in that, no doubt about it. In 50-over cricket, my late, great friend Martin Crowe said, ‘Always let your best batsman face the most deliveries’. I mean, that’s his stock-in-trade; let him face the most deliveries, fair and simple.”

With Taylor announcing his retirement, the New Zealand top-order appears vulnerable, save for Devon Conway, whose brilliant batting is lighting up the IPL. He exploded for 83 runs in only 45 balls as CSK defeated RCB by eight runs on Monday in Bengaluru. In addition to other possibilities, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) might consider having Henry Nicholls, who filled the opening position during the 2019 World Cup, return.
