To the pleasure of his supporters, “Captain Cool” did, however, appear at the inaugural match and received a heralded welcome during the opening ceremony. In the second innings, the 41-year-old appeared a little uneasy as he attempted to block a ball from Deepak Chahar‘s 19th over from falling down the leg side. After CSK’s defeat, head coach Stephen Fleming disclosed that Dhoni didn’t experience any knee problems in the first game but experienced cramps during Gujarat’s chase.

“He Was Always Playing”: Stephen Fleming

“He was always playing. Not sure where that story (doubtful for the opener) came from. He was nursing a sore knee throughout the month of pre-season, but today (Friday), it was just cramped. It wasn’t the knee.”

Fleming said at the post-match press conference

The CSK captain’s 14* off 7-ball innings-ending run was a wonderful way to end the game. He started his inning with a four and a six, whipping up the stadium crowd. Thanks to Dhoni’s performance, Chennai was able to register a total of 178/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

On Dhoni’s fitness, Fleming stated that although the legendary player won’t be as quick as he was 15 years ago, he is still a great asset to the team.

Overall Batting Performance Of The Team

“He is not going to be as quick and agile as he was 15 years ago, but he is still a great side leader and, even with the bat, will still play a part. He knows his limitations and is a valuable player on the field. He is a legend.”

Said Stephen Fleming

Gujarat Titans reached their goal of 179 runs in 19.2 overs thanks to Shubman Gill’s outstanding 63-ball innings. On his IPL debut, 20-year-old Rajvardhan Hangargekar shined for CSK, picking up 3/36 in his four over. With Gaikwad on fire, CSK appeared to be headed for 200 or more before Titans stopped the run flow in the middle overs.

Titans successfully chased down CSK’s final total of 178 for seven with four balls remaining and five wickets in hand. The coach praised Ruturaj Gaikwad for his ferocious 92 runs off 50 balls, calling him a “great player” with tremendous untapped potential.
