After electing to bowl first in the match, the Capitals openers got off to a steady start before Prithvi Shaw (7) got out while attempting a shot and was caught at mid-on. Mohammad Shami hurried him with his pace. Delhi’s number 3, Mitchell Marsh played a beautiful shot through the off-side but in the same over got a big inside edge which resulted in his downfall. GT’s Shami conceded 29 runs in his three Power Play overs but bagged the wickets of Marsh and Shaw.

Like the last game, skipper David Warner was fighting the lone batter. He found an able ally in Sarfaraz Khan as both of them scored a combined 67 (66) between them to steady the ship and lay a foundation for the big hitters. In came GT’s Alzarri Joseph, who made an immediate impact by forcing a struggling David Warner to edge onto his stumps for 37 from 32 balls before bouncing out Rilee Rossouw (0) on his first delivery who could only glove the rising delivery to gully. Leg spinner Rashid Khan (3/41) took care of middle-order wickets dismissing Sarfaraz Khan, Abishek Porel (20), and Aman Khan (8) in the process to restrict the Capitals to a total of 162.

Chasing a 163-run target, Gujarat openers got off to a flier but like the Capitals, they couldn’t continue for too long. Bowling his first over in the IPL 2023, returning speedster Anrich Nortje got the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha. In his next over he dismissed Shubman Gill with a similar delivery. Khaleel bowled an expensive first over but squared up Hardik with a peach off the final ball of the powerplay. At 54/3, the game was hanging in balance and that’s when GT’s number 3 Sai Sudharsan joined forces with the impact player- Vijay Shankar. The duo batted sensibly and kept the scoreboard ticking by rotating the strike and striking odd boundaries to keep the asking rate in check. The Tamil Nadu duo forged a match-defining fifty-plus run partnership.

Mitchell Marsh bowled well and broke the stand with the wicket of Shankar. DC managed to bowl a couple of tight overs. But the 16th over bowled by Mukesh Kumar thrashed the hopes of a DC win as David Miller struck two sixes and a four to pull the match in his team’s favour. Meanwhile, Sudharsan notched up his second IPL fifty and remained unbeaten till the end as his team crossed the line with 11 balls and 6 wickets to spare. Both Sudharsan and Miller remained unbeaten to guide GT home.
