Pakistan vs South Africa History

Both Pakistan and South Africa are full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), along with ten other nations, and enjoy Twenty20 International, Test, and One-Day International status.

The Pakistan national cricket team, also known as the Shaheens, have had huge international success. They entered first-class cricket in 1935 and have since won several major trophies, including the 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup, 2009 ICC T20 World Cup, 2016 ICC Test Championship, and most recently, the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.

Out of 439 Test Matches, Pakistan won 143, lost 134, while 162 resulted in a draw. Interestingly enough, they made their test debut against India in 1952, with India winning that match.

The Shaheens have a much better win rate at Twenty20 Internationals, where they recorded 110 wins, 63 losses, and three ties. They were runners-up at the inaugural tournament in 2007 and were crowned champions two years later.

In the ODIs, Pakistan has played 936 matches, winning 490 of them and losing on 417 occasions, along with nine ties and 20 no-result finishes.

On the other hand, South Africa has a much longer cricket tradition but has historically been less successful in high-profile competitions. The 1998 Champions Trophy was their only title win at an ICC-organised tournament. It’s also worth mentioning that the infamous Proteas won the Gold Medal at the 1988 Commonwealth Games. They’re currently ranked top six in Tests, ODIs, and T20s.

South Africa’s rise to prominence came after their apartheid ban, which lasted from 1970 to 1990. After being reinstated by the ICC in 1991, the team lost their first post-ban international match against India. The golden era of South African international cricket was from 2002 to 2014. During this time of dominance, the team recorded significant wins against top-tier squads, although they came up short at major events. At one point in 2012, South Africa led the rankings across all three formats, becoming the first-ever team to achieve this astonishing feat.

Pakistan vs South Africa, 2021 – 2nd T20, Preview: Best Betting Odds and Winner Prediction

It’s been a miserable tour for South Africa as they’ve failed to win a single match. They’ll take confidence from their performance in the 1st T20 where they did most things right and were ahead for the major part of the game. The bowlers were spot on with their line and lengths and never allowed the Pakistani batsmen to cut loose. Had it not been a magnificent inning from Mohammed Rizwan, Pakistan would have struggled to cross even 150.  They would have fancied their chances of chasing 170, especially after the start they got but a middle order collapse saw them stumble to a heartbreaking 3 run loss. You’d feel that if South Africa has to get past Pakistan, they’ll need runs from players like David Miller and Henrich Klaasen.

Pakistan would feel relieved after surviving the scare in the 1st T20. They were nowhere near their best but still were good enough for South Africa. Their bowlers must be credited for the win who kept on coming back, picking wickets at the right time and keeping South Africa in check. Just like Shamsi for South Africa, Usman Qadir was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan. The pacers were brilliant too but you’d feel that Qadir will be the main threat for South Africa, considering the amount of turn the spinners are getting from the pitch.

Playing Combination

PAKISTAN

Probable XI- Reeza Hendricks, Janemann Malan, Henrich Klaasen(c&wk), David Miller, George Linde, JJ Smuts, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lutho Sipamla,Junior Dala, Tabraiz Shamshi

SOUTH AFRICA

Probable XI- Janneman Malan, Reeza Hendricks, Jacques Snyman, Heinrich Klaasen (c & wk), David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Bjorn Fortuin, Junior Dala, Lutho Sipamla, Tabraiz Shamsi

Probable Top Performers

Babar Azam – Babar Azam is among the best players in world cricket. He’s definitely in middle of a lean patch but he’s capable of turning things around quickly. He’s one of the few players that have an average of over 50 in the shortest version of the match and has 3 fifties in last 5 innings

Mohammed Rizwan – Mohammed Rizwan has been in fine form of late. He had a good series against New Zealand, was good against South Africa in Tests and started the T-20 series with a magnificent hundred. He can be backed to come good in the next game

Usman Qadir – The young leg spinner has cemented his place in the Pakistan team after some scintillating performances against Zimbabwe and New Zealand. He was getting a lot of turn in the first T-20 and will a real threat to South Africa.

Broadcast details

The live telecast of the series will be available on the Sony Network while you can stream the match live on the SonyLiv app.

Probable winners

Even though Pakistan batting failed in the first match, we expect them to play well in the second T20. All their batsmen have been in fine form and they won’t be concerned about one bad performance. South Africa though has a lot to worry about. There is not much experience in the team and if Miller and Klaasen won’t perform, they’ll fail to win most games.  For us, Pakistan are big favourites.

Pakistan vs South Africa, 2021 – 1st T20, Preview: Best Betting Odds and Winner Prediction

After thrashing South Africa in the Test series, Pakistan set their eyes on the 3 match T-20 series that gets underway at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 11th.

South Africa looked exhausted in the Test series but with new faces in the T-20 squad, they’ll be hoping for some change in their fortunes. However, they’ve not been that great in the T-20Is of late. Their last series was against England where the three Lions decimated them 3-0. Against Pakistan, the challenge will be even stiffer considering the fact that the men in green lost just three of their eleven matches in 2020. They’re also the number 1 team in T-20 cricket so one can’t expect any leniency towards the visitors. David Miller, Janneman Malan, Reeza Hendricks, Henrich Klassen are the players that South Africa will be looking up to. But they’ve not been in the best of form. Also, the bowling looked slightly weak with not much experience.

Coming to Pakistan, they’ve been on a rampage in T-20 cricket. They did lost their last series to New Zealand but they’ve arguably been the best T-20 side in the last few years. The rise of players like Mohammed Rizwan, Khushdil Shah, Haider Ali, Ifthikhar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf have added to their strength. Add to that the quality that Babar Azam brings to the team. The bowling is also laced with plenty of class in Hasan Ali, Mohammed Hasnain, Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi and Usman Qadir. When you do compare these two teams, South Africa doesn’t even come close to Pakistan.

Playing Combination

Pakistan

Probable XI- Babar Azam©, Khushdil Shah, Haider Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammed Rizwan(wk), Hussain Talat, Haris Rauf/Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Mohammed Hasnain, Usman Qadir

South Africa

Probable XI- Reeza Hendricks, Janemann Malan, Henrich Klaasen(c&wk), David Miller, George Linde, JJ Smuts, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lutho Sipamla,Junior Dala, Tabraiz Shamshi

Probable Top Performers

Babar Azam – Babar Azam is among the best players going around in T-20 cricket. He’s one of the few players that have an average of over 50 in the shortest version of the match. He missed the last series against New Zealand due to injury but he was Pakistan’s man of the series in the earlier series against Zimbabwe. He has 4 fifties in the last 5 innings he’s played.

Usman Qadir – The young leg spinner has cemented his place in the Pakistan team after some scintillating performances against Zimbabwe and New Zealand. He’s a very difficult bowler to pick and considering South Africa’s vows against the spinners he’ll be a massive asset for Pakistan

Henrich Klaasen – We’ll back Henrich Klaasen from South Africa to come good in the match. He’s a batsman that can turn the game on his heads. He and Miller are the two most experienced batsmen but Miller generally struggles against the spinners. Klaasen has been handed the responsibility of leading the South African unit and the added responsibility of leadership might get the best out of him.

Broadcast details

The live telecast of the series will be available on the Sony Network while you can stream the match live on the SonyLiv app.

Probable winners

Pakistan at the moment looks too good for this South Africa team. They have a quality batting line up backed by a top class bowling unit. South Africa have not been that good of late. Most of their players are not in good form and considering their issues against the turning balls, we expect them to struggle in the match.

South Africa and their vows with the subcontinent pitches in not something new. Whether it’s the flaws in their technique or  there is something to do with their confidence, for the last few years South Africa have not looked a team they used to be.

They arrived in Pakistan after mauling Sri Lanka on their home turf and it looked like they’ll give a stiff challenge to an unpredictable Pakistan team. However, that was not the case as their batting faltered and they lost the match by 7 wickets.

Most of their batsmen got starts but failed to convert them into big scores. This is something they’d like to work on in the next match. Players like Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock are quality players and can certainly turn the tables in favor of South Africa.

The pitch in Rawalpindi is expected to assist the pacers and in Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje, South Africa does have the quality to get Pakistan batting under pressure.

For Pakistan, even though they won the last match, their performance was far from clinical. Once again it was the duo of Fawad Alam and Faheem Ashraf that bailed them out of trouble. Both these players were in top form in their previous series against New Zealand as well. Babar Azam failed in the first Test but he’s a class player and can be expected to come good in the next match. Azhar Ali too had a decent game with the bat.

Talking about the bowling, Yasir Shah and Nauman Ali were the pick of the bowlers in the 1st Test but they might not be that effective on the wicket of Rawalpindi. Also, Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali have not been that good in the longer format of late.

Pakistan batting looks slightly vulnerable to us, especially on a pacy wicket of Rawalpindi, and if South Africa can get Babar Azam early, they’ll be in with a great chance. Also, the extra pace in the pitch will make South African batsmen feel more comfortable.

Playing Combinations

Pakistan

Probable XI:

Abid Ali, Imran Butt, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam (c), Fawad Alam, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Faheem Ashraf, Yasir Shah, Hasan Ali/Haris Rauf, Nauman Ali, Shaheen Afridi

South Africa

Probable XI:

Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock (c & wk), Temba Bavuma, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje

Probable Top Performers

Babar Azam – Even though Babar Azam missed out in the first Test, he’ll still be a major threat for South Africa. He’s regarded as one of the best batsmen of the modern era and we’ll back him to come good in the next match.

Fawad Alam – It’s been a dream comeback for Fawad Alam in Test cricket. After scoring a brilliant 102 against New Zealand at Bay Oval, Alam registered another hundred in the 1st test against South Africa. He’s looking in fine form and will play a key role for Pakistan in the next match.

Dean Eglar – Dean Elgar got starts in both the innings of the last Test. He’s a batsmen that’s technically very sound and can play real big innings, something South Africa will be expecting from him in Rawalpindi.

Probable Winners

We believe that conditions will play a major role in deciding the winning of this match. The pitch at Rawalpindi will have some extra pace that will work in favor of South Africa. The batsmen will feel more comfortable while the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje will get plenty out of this pitch. We back South Africa to win this match.

Finally, after a long gap of 13 years, South Africa is playing a Test match in Pakistan. The first of the two-match Test series between the two nations is set to commence on Tuesday in Karachi. This is a crucial game for the visitors in World Test Championship as they still have a glimmer of hope of making it to the final of the tournament. Pakistan, on the other hand, have no hopes in that aspect.

However, the hosts will be delighted that the cricket in whites has resumed in the country and that too a big team like South Africa visiting Pakistan will go a long way in international cricket’s regular resumption. Meanwhile, their skipper Babar Azam has returned to action after missing both Tests against New Zealand. The home side are set to hand a debut to Imran Butt and will hope for things to work for them.

South Africa are riding high after twin victories over Sri Lanka at home and will be keen on continuing their good run in the format. But their sub-continent recently is not encouraging and the Quinton de Kock-led side will be wary of that. A complete team effort is needed to topple Pakistan at home.

Playing combinations for PAK vs SA

Pakistan

Predicted XI: Abid Ali, Imran Butt, Babar Azam (C), Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam, Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Faheem Ashraf, Nauman Ali/Sajid Khan, Yasir Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali

South Africa

Predicted XI: Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock (C & WK), Temba Bavuma, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi

Probable Top Performers

Babar Azam

Babar Azam is Pakistan’s best batsman at the moment and clearly, he will be hungry after missing out on playing in New Zealand. He averages 45.4 in 29 Tests so far having scored 2045 runs with 5 tons and 15 half-centuries to his name. He will certainly be key for Pakistan in this series.

Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis agonizingly missed out on a well-deserved double hundred in the first Test against Sri Lanka. He is coming into this series in great form and clearly, his experience will be needed for the Proteas if they are to have any chance of going past Pakistan.

Yasir Shah

Yasir Shah loves bowling at home. He will come into the game especially in the second innings and will threaten South Africa with his wrist-spin. He has so far accounted for 227 wickets in 43 Tests and the leg-spinner will be looking to make amends after a poor New Zealand tour.
