In 2016, the former RCB skipper took his team to the final. Though they lost the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad and ended as runners-up, Virat’s performance in that season is still the best. Virat set numerous records in that season and was the only player to cross the 900-run mark in a single edition of a T20 tournament. Jos Buttler was the only other player to come close, but even he couldn’t reach 900 runs. Buttler made 863 runs in 2022 in 17 innings at 57.53 and 149.05, including four centuries and four half-centuries. However, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has named an Indian star who is capable of breaking Virat’s record. In a discussion on Star Sports, Shastri said,

“I feel, it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get good number of opportunities to score runs. The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point of time only he will already have 300-400 runs. According to me, it is very difficult to break the record. An opening batsmen can only break this record if it is possible.”

Shubman Gill has been in great form over the last 6-7 months across all three formats. In fact, he is the leading run-scorer in 2023 combined in all three formats. Speaking of his performance in the IPL 2023, he started the tournament with a match-winning 63 runs against CSK. But he followed it up with two normal scores of 14 and 39.
