West Indies women’s cricket team captain Hayley Matthews has been named the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year for 2023, becoming only the second West Indies player to achieve the feat after Stafanie Taylor in 2015. Throughout the year, Mathews displayed outstanding performances with both bat and ball.

Mathews clinched the award with an impressive record, surpassing the likes of Australia’s Ellyse Perry, England’s Sophie Ecclestone and Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu. She scored a total of 700 runs and took 19 wickets in 14 T20 matches played in 2023.

Mathews said she was honoured to receive the award. She has blessed herself to have had a wonderful year while proudly representing the West Indies. Reflecting on the significance of the feat, Mathews acknowledged the inspiration his fellow West Indies players had gained from witnessing him receive similar awards in the past.

In an interview with ICC, Mathews expressed her feelings, “I am really blessed that I had a very good year with West Indies wearing those colours, performing really well and helping the team. When I was growing up, I saw many of my idols getting these. There are so many different awards, so it’s special for me to come out as a player with this award. “

As the top-ranked player in the ICC Women’s T20I all-rounder rankings, Mathews particularly excelled in the series against Australia in the latter half of 2023. She scored 310 runs in three games at an average of 155, including two half-centuries and a century, setting the record for the most runs in a T20I series by a West Indies women’s batter.

Mathews will be aiming to repeat his stellar performances in 2024, especially with the T20 World Cup on the horizon. In 2016, West Indies won the T20 World Cup and Australia won the next two titles. As the upcoming tournament approaches, Mathews wished his team to be on the winning track once again, stressing on the influential role the West Indies, known for their power-hitting prowess, can play in the T20 World Cup 2024.
