SKY’s Absence Surprises Ponting
Suryakumar Yadav made his debut in Test cricket against Australia at home earlier this year. In the absence of Rishabh Pant who is recovering from the horrifying accident that kept him out of the IPL 2023, Suryakumar Yadav could be useful for the Indian team. But he is not part of the main squad. The BCCI named him as one of the stand-by players for the same. While asked if the Mumbai Indians batter should have been named in the squad for the WTC final, Ricky Ponting expressed surprise and said, “Yes”.
In an event organized by the International Cricket Council ahead of the WTC final at the Oval from June 7, Ponting further backed Ishan Kishan in the absence of Rishabh Pant who was India’s go-to batter in case of a top-order collapse. Ponting explained,

“But there is another X factor that has just been added in Ishan Kishan. If you look at the way he plays, he is probably like Rishabh Pant with his potential to keep and bat in the middle order.” He added, “If they do play those guys they should be given the right to play an aggressive brand of cricket.”Ponting Backs Ishan Kishan
He also elaborated on the factors that India should be concerned about ahead of the important fixture. While he believes that Australia will be starting with an advantage, the Delhi Capitals coach explained,
“The best chance for India to achieve a result is by being a bit more adventurous in the way they play and Australia will try to do the same thing.” He added, “With the injury issues India have got, they can go with few different ways especially in batting. Before Rahul’s injury, I had him in the eleven, now that he is not there, they need to pick Ishan or KS Bharat.”Australia to start with advantage in WTC Final

Ricky Ponting concluded by saying conditions at the Oval will be much more similar to an Australian wicket compared to an Indian wicket which would be slightly beneficial to Australia. He further insisted,
“If this game was played in India, I would have said it would be really hard for Australia to win. If this game was played in Australia, I would say Australia will be favourites but in England, it brings the teams together.”
